If you’ve been around Damsels In Success for any length of time at all, you’ll know we describe ourselves as “life-changing” (and if you’re new to Damsels In Success, welcome!)
I’ve certainly found that to be true, so I thought I’d share my experiences here for you.
Ready? Are you sitting comfortably? Let’s go!
As with all stories, I should start somewhere near the beginning to give you some context. I am originally from Dorset, but moved to Bristol to attend university (I have a Business degree). I loved being in this city! Growing up in a quiet town was fine, but a city is so much more exciting (and my parents laugh at me now for being a “city girl”).
After I graduated, I ended up moving back home to Dorset, and spent a few years there working for the local council, feeling thoroughly fed up & unfulfilled. I managed to find a job in Bristol and moved back here almost 8 years ago.
Now, this is all well and good, and I was (and still am!) delighted to be living in Bristol again. There’s something about this city that’s just so vibrant without being impersonal like London.
Around this time last year, I was browsing Facebook, and an advert caught my eye – it was for the IGNITE! 2013 event. Now, I’ve been studying internet marketing for the past 5 or so years, and had been to a couple of live events, which mostly seemed to consist of hard selling and then people getting drunk at the bar. Plus I found it to be very cliquey & heavily male-dominated. (I have nothing against drinking at the bar, by the way, but that’s not the only thing I pay a conference fee for – I want helpful content too!).
So I thought I’d take a look at the sales page as it said it was aimed at female entrepreneurs, and I found myself nodding along and smiling as I read the sales page – this finally sounded like somewhere I actually wanted to be, where I wouldn’t feel like a spare part at the back of the room! At the time I saw it, I think I had a few hours before the early bird price was going to end, so I read the sales page again, checked my diary to make sure I was available, took a deep breath, and booked! I then proceeded to talk endlessly about it for the few weeks running up to it, as I could feel that this was going to be a different type of experience, and I couldn’t wait!
I wrote a blog post about it on my return, which is over on my Organised Goddess website. I couldn’t believe how many hugs I got, and how freeing and non-judgemental it was! You may think a room full of women could be bitchy or catty, but that simply wasn’t the case. We were all there to learn more about living a successful life with ease, and supporting each other. I’ve never felt that anywhere before (and I’ve only felt it since at Damsels In Success meetings!).
I took so many notes, and made a load of new friends as well. Plus it was a chance to dress up, which I always enjoy – anything with sparkles and I’m happy!
As part of IGNITE! they promote the monthly Damsels In Success meetings, though as I was working full time and the old Bristol meeting was on a Friday morning, I knew I wouldn’t be able to make it. However, there was an opportunity to join as an online member, so I did that. The online membership allowed access to 2 free monthly meetings, and so I found the Cardiff meetings run on a Monday morning. Now, I work a 9-day fortnight in my day job, which gives me every other Monday off. So in January & March this year, I found myself on the train over to Cardiff to take part in Michelle’s group.
I loved it!
I personally found that I got so much more out of attending the meetings rather than just the online membership, and so in April this year I became a fully-fledged member of the Cardiff Damsels group.
I then decided to attend one of the Licence to Lead days in June, primarily as some more personal development and to learn about Lucie’s 6 LAWS. However, I also found out that the opportunity to host a group in Bristol was likely to become available within the next few months. Doesn’t that sound like perfect timing?!
So after a little consideration on my part, and checking that I’d be able to run my group in the evening, I signed myself up…and here I am!
My brand new Bristol group is launching on Tuesday 7th October 2014, and will run on the first Tuesday of every month, from 6.30 – 9.30pm.
